Alone In the Wilderness

January 29, 2009

Today was a Wednesday. I spent my free day alone  in the wilderness. I traveled to a local preserve called Brooker Creek Preserve.  I spent a few hours outdoors under a cloudless blue sky. It was a perfect day. It was one of those days where you completely get absorbed into your surroundings, the hum from the local interstate disappears, and the ongoing thoughts of everyday life subside.

A few days ago I happened to stumbled across a special on the local PBS station. It was titled “Alone In the Wilderness.” It was a film about Dick Proenneke, a middle-aged man who spent the later part of his life alone in the Twin Lakes region of Alaska. He built a cabin and lived off the land. Most of his time was spent studying the flora and fauna of the region. Overall it is a great story and I recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors.

The Art of Florida Bonsai

January 25, 2009

I am by no means a bonsai specialist. The word bonsai in simplest terms means tree in a shallow pot, but symbolically it represents capturing the beauty of nature. Until recently I had no interest in the art of bonsai. I have always had an interest though in all things native to Florida.

My parents this past Christmas gave me a bonsai. This bonsai was unique because it was a Yaupon Holly. Yaupon Hollies are native to Florida. They are commonly found in the understory and I have always admired their hardy nature.
